Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly a quarter of all marine species. Their survival depends on a delicate partnership between corals and microscopic algae, which supply most of the energy the corals need. When water stays too warm for too long, this partnership breaks down and the reef begins to bleach.
